Sciatica

Sciatica is pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and weakness often bundled together and radiating down from the back to the leg. It is caused by injury to or pressure on nerves that join to form the Sciatic Nerve.  Causes include the following: lumbar herniated disk, pelvic injury or tumor.  Treatment of sciatica includes the identification of the underlying cause.  If a herniated disk is causing the sciatica, surgery may be required for treatment.  Surgery includes a laminectomy, which is an opening in the spine through the back. The disk herniation is removed freeing the nerve. The disk is still preserved and continues to function after recovery.
