Hydrocephalus

 

Hydrocephalus is the increase of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain.  This is often seen in children.  In adults it can occur because of trauma, bleeding in the brain, obstruction of spinal flow from a tumor or infection.  Elderly patients may develop Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) which results in dementia, gait disturbance, and urinary incontinence.  Treatment may require CSF shunting with a Ventriculoperitoneal shunt.  This is a tubing placed under the skin draining fluid from the brain into the abdominal cavity and has a valve to control the pressures and volume of spinal fluid flow.
